I don’t remember a time when I didn’t believe in Jesus.
While I wasn’t consistently in church growing up, my teenage years were the most formative for me. I was a 12-year-old church camp goer when I really decided to dive in and live for Jesus, making decisions to honor him instead of myself. It was not easy being a teenage girl in high school living for Christ. But God blessed me with amazing mentors at church and in high school, a few Christian friends, and solid resources that helped me develop a personal habit of studying the Bible and praying.
While I don’t have children that are teenagers (YET!), I’m passionate about supporting parents who have children in all developmental stages. Since my teenage years were crucial for me in my spiritual walk, I’m excited to find resources that I can share that will help mommas of teens and their teens!
Beloved Devotional – Overview
I was given a free copy of Beloved: 365 Devotions For Young Women for free in return for a review. All opinions are my own.
Beloved: 365 Devotions for Young Women uses the inspiring stories of girls and women in the Bible – such as Ruth, Esther, Mary, and Abigail – to encourage you in your faith as you build confidence in yourself day after day.
Each daily devotional provides daily scripture (1-2 verses) before elaborating on the scripture with 2-3 paragraphs of commentary relating the scripture to real life as a young woman. Each day is short and sweet, and provides a few lines for thoughts or notes.
Beloved Devotional – My Honest Review
The cover and pages are beautiful. I would have loved having this devotional sit on my nightstand as a teen. It’s elegant and well-designed.
Each daily devotional in Beloved will take less than 5 minutes to complete. I think that is perfect for young women aiming to set a habit of Bible Study and prayer, without making it too weighty. The importance of establishing good habits can start small at this age.
As I mentioned, the teenage years for young women is critical development time for so many things – confidence, body image, spiritual understanding, and more. The Beloved devotional strives to support women as they are navigating these topics, which is where I offer a word of caution.
Beloved devotions take 1-2 verses and relate it to hot topics like sexuality, relationships, and femininity. It’s dangerous to take verses out of context and add our own agenda. If this devotional was given to my teenage daughter, I would want to go through it with her and ensure we talk about the topics and ensure the scriptures are being used in a way that God intended. There were a few topics that made me pause – is this really what God was trying to say in the verses? Or is this a stretch to add someone else’s agenda? If you ever have this thought (with any resource), I encourage you to take out your Bible, pray, and decide for yourself.
Overall, this is a devotional that I think will help many teens develop good habits. As with any resource, it’s important to read Beloved with a gospel lens, and ensure it’s speaking truth into your life.
