Messy Tired Love is a devotional for moms that connects real life mom moments to the truth of the gospel. And kids sure do change things, don’t they? My house is messier and I’m way more tired than my pre-mom years, yet my heart is overflowing with God’s love in a way that I didn’t understand before. I’m a proud momma of two sweet blessings, Jacob and Vera. If you told me five years ago that I’d be the author of a devotional for moms, I’d think you must have mistaken my future self for someone else. God’s plan is always better than mine, and I am so excited to share my experience and lessons learned with you. I’m an open book and am a strong believer in community, especially among moms, so I hope you’ll laugh, cry and share your story with me too!
Kristina’s Back Story
If you told me a few years ago that would be writing devotionals for Christian moms, I probably wouldn’t have believed you. So much has changed in a relatively short amount of time, that God obviously has different plans for me than I had for myself.
My life was turned upside down a few years ago when I was required to relocate for my job a week after coming back from maternity leave with my first born. Considering my in-balanced hormones, tough time to adjusting to a baby, and the fact that my husband, Matthew, was still in his PhD program (Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology) at The Ohio State University, I said no to moving across the country. Ever since then, I haven’t had one ounce of control in my life and it’s been tough to trust God when things aren’t going my way. I was bitter and angry about losing my job but became a business consultant and freelance writer for a handful of clients that at least helped to pay the bills. Despite our fervent prayers to stay put in Columbus, Ohio, there were no job opportunities presenting themselves to Matthew after graduation. We decided that God must be answering our prayers differently than we would like, and we were going to have to move. Doors flew open left and right and, long story short, we moved our to San Diego, California so Matthew can complete his PostDoc at UCSD.
In the whirlwind of moving and getting settled in our new home, I wasn’t homesick right away. It hit me three or four months in when we had no friends or family rotating in and out of our home like we were used to in Ohio. It’s been tough being a mom to little ones when we are so far from those we are closest to. We miss out on so many fun adventures and milestones while they miss out on ours. Matthew and I rarely get a date night because, let’s be honest, cost of living and especially childcare is astronomical in California. My consultant work has been up and down which makes security an uncertainty. Added to that, when Matthew finishes his postdoc we will likely be moving to another part of the country where he can find a faculty job at a university. In the midst of all of this, I’ve had to trust God completely because nothing in my life has been certain. Where I will live, where our money is coming from and how much we will make, when we will see our family again…it’s all up in the air.
Devotionals for Christian Moms: Part of God’s Plan
But here’ what I can tell you for certain: God is God in Ohio and in California. We found Grace City SD as our church home and got plugged in right away. I have the blessing of working from home so that I can spend as much time as possible with my children. My husband and I have grown closer through this tumultuous time as we lean in to Jesus and each other. What better time to write devotionals for Christian moms than when I am the real life case study of everything I am writing about?
If you knock on my door in sunny San Diego, you’ll likely find me cooking with my little chefs, skyping friends and family in Ohio (Go Buckeyes!), eating something chocolate, or laughing with my amazing husband. Or, maybe you won’t get an answer because we are out exploring all the things that southern California has to offer. Matthew and I are passionate about discipleship and help lead the women and men’s ministry at Grace City SD. I decided to be brave and start writing devotionals for Christian moms in hopes that I can discipleship moms like you where you are in what you’re going through.
