How Great Is Our God: Birthday Parties, 5-Year-Olds, And Science

At five years old, my son has developed a love for party planning. 

Just like his momma, he loves having people in our home. He is regularly asking when so-and-so can come over for dinner, or when his friends can come over to play. When he knows there is a special day coming up, the questions are geared toward preparing our home: how can we decorate? What games will we play with our visitors? What will we eat together?

For his birthday this year, months before the big day, he was talking about the party. He wanted his party to include all of his favorite things: swimming, science experiments, waffles, and a birthday cake that had snowmen as the decoration. If we let five year olds plan all of our parties, how much more fun would they be?!?!

His plans were altered a bit as we got closer, Instead of making waffles for everyone at his party, we did waffles for breakfast and then ordered pizza for the party. His birthday cake didn’t have snowmen, but was instead a volcano cake with real lava flowing as we sang happy birthday (thank you liquid jello and dry ice)!

Since his birthday, his love for science has really sharpened. He’s always on the lookout for for rainbows in glasses of water or steam and asking great questions about how things are created or work on the inside. His interest in science has been the most natural opportunity to talk to him about God’s creativity and power with him. So when I learned about How Great Is Our God!, I couldn’t wait to get a copy. I knew he would love it, and it would help me bridge his interest with God’s Word even more.

I cannot say enough amazing things about this devotional. The author creatively ties in God’s Word to the most unique topics. For example, Day 5 is about exploding seeds. We learned about exploding cucumbers that shoot their seeds 20 feet from the fruit once the pressure builds up inside. We also learned about a tree in Africa called the Sandbox tree that shoots its seeds with so much force that they can travel 150 miles per hour and will harm whatever is in its way. 

After reading the devotional, we then looked up YouTube videos to see these plants in action. Click here to watch one of the interesting videos we found about exploding seeds.

After introducing such amazing plants that God created, the devotional talks about sowing seeds of kindness and how, just like the plants that disperse their seeds to grow other plants, we need to sow seeds of kindness to share God’s love with others. 

After that devotional, we talk about sowing seeds of kindness quite often. When my son decided to make a bad decision I asked him, “Was that a seed of kindness you just sowed?” He immediately remembered what we had talked about and was able to turn his mind to God’s Word and what it had said. 

I’m always looking for easy ways to bring Jesus into my parenting and everyday life. Mommas, reading this devotional a few times a week over breakfast has been one of the easiest ways for me to do that. If you have older children, you could do one every day. I choose to go slowly so we can really work on and talk about each topic. The book has 100 devotions covering everything from space and time, to the earth and weather, to the human body, to plants and animals, and much more. We’re not through the whole book yet. We can’t wait to see what else we learn about both God and what he has created!
