Colossians 3:17
And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Everyone knows that being a mom is a 24/7 job. The middle of the night “mommy, I need you” calls, the daily night-time routines, the help with homework requests, the “I just need to talk” phone calls. We are never truly “off duty” as a mom.
In one of the hardest seasons of my life, I was caring for my two-year-old full-time at home, pregnant with my second child, and working 30+ hours a week from home as a consultant. I was in a new city with no friends or family within 2,000 miles. I was having trouble finding affordable, reliable childcare which meant I was up at 5am working on my computer until my toddler woke up. I’d spend the morning with him, occasionally having to do video conference calls with him on my lap. When I laid him down for a nap in the afternoon, I was able to get in a couple more hours IF he decided to take his nap. When he woke up, we’d make dinner together, eat and have family time with daddy until bedtime at 7:30pm. I’d immediately start working again when he was asleep until about 10:30pm. This was every single weekday. And on weekends, I’d also work during his nap time and some evenings to get my work done. It was exhausting to say the least.
But you know, we continued to attend church every Sunday. I joined a weekly women’s Bible study that kept me in the Word and accountable to other believers. The whole family also attended a weekly small group on Monday nights. My husband and I didn’t sacrifice our fellowship with God or with other believers despite this insanely busy time of life. Leaving a legacy that reflects Jesus means working hard without making God a lower priority in your life. It’s something I strive for even though it’s difficult. I want to leave a legacy that shows my children I put God first despite my circumstances so that they will strive to do the same.
What are your life circumstances? Some moms work outside the home with nine-to-five (or longer) jobs. Some work inside the home, spending every single second that the babies are sleeping sneaking in some time to get the latest project done. Other moms are stay-at-home moms, caring for their children and running the home as their sole priority. Some moms home school. Others send their kids to private school. Others walk their kids to the bus stop to send them to public school.
There is no right or wrong to any of these parenting methods. However you choose parent, do it in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. If you want to be a mom that reflects Jesus and leaves a legacy that points your family to the gospel, you have to set the standard for Christ-like living. Work hard. Put Jesus above all things. Live it out and express to your children that you are intentionally doing so.
What will it look like for you to be mom that works hard in the name of Jesus Christ?

Wow, I couldn’t imagine your work/mom life during that time when you were pregnant! You are one strong woman!!!! What you wrote is so good and true! Each of our mom lives looks so different, but each one is to work hard for the gospel and in raising our children. Thanks for sharing your heart!
Thanks, Denise! It was definitely a challenge – thankfully it’s not quite so bad now (although not too much better – haha.
